Versatility Keeps the Nissan Rogue as a Top Seller

The Nissan Rogue might not offer the most impressive numbers in every category, but it does offer a variety of features that allows the customer to personalize their vehicle. As the best-selling vehicle that Nissan sells in the US, the Rogue is certainly a popular choice, reassuring Nissan that versatility and personalization are some of the most important aspects when someone is deciding which vehicle can meet their needs.

If you are basing your opinion of the Rogue on the design alone, you will be happy to find a sporty and compact crossover SUV, but after driving it you might feel rather disappointed with the performance. With a deceiving design such as this, you might be concerned that the overall vehicle is deceiving, not living up to the rest of the title that is assigned to it, but we want to assure you that it includes everything a compact crossover SUV should, plus some.

Design and Interior

Nissan has pretty much created their own language when talking about the design aspects of their vehicles. From their "boomerang" headlights to the "kick up waist line," what it usually boils down to is a sporty and aggressive design. While it does give the vehicle an impressive look, it might go a little over the top with the naming.

More aptly named, the trim selection for the Rogue offers a nice diversity that is (mostly) appreciated. From bottom to top the trims include the Rogue S, SV, Midnight Edition, and SL. While all the trims share a similar look, the Midnight Edition adds some black accents and details to the SV trim, making it more like a package option than a trim of its own. Looking at the other trim options will leave you impressed, having a well-equipped base model and an array of available features at the top.

The S trim features everything you would expect, from Bluetooth integration to air condition and cruise control, you are getting everything most crossovers offer. This might seem unremarkable, but its low price makes it impressive for the segment. Once you start to upgrade though, your options increase to an impressive amount. Even the SV option includes dual-zone A/C, bigger wheels, more comfortable front seats, and standard NissanConnect that will connect to your smartphone to control apps.

When you want to include every feature, the SL option is for you. Although it denies you a third-row and raises the price over the 30,000 dollar mark, you will be getting everything you could want in a vehicle. From a 360-degree camera to heated and leather upholstered seats, you won't be left wanting more. If you feel like throwing even more money at a compact crossover SUV, you can choose the premium package.

An Array of Seating Options

Whether you have a family that is over the standard 2.5 children or if you are the designated carpool driver, you will appreciate the ability to include a third-row option on all trims, minus the SL, which doesn't accommodate it. While it will allow for up to seven passengers, you will have organize your passengers by height because that third row doesn't offer too much legroom. Even with a nine-inch track for the second row which allows you to add some extra third-row legroom, you will be hard-pressed to fit adults back there. The third row also makes it difficult to bring cargo with you because it cuts your cargo space to an abysmally low volume, but, as mentioned, the third row doesn't need to be included.

Without the third row, the Rogue offers up to 70 cubic feet of storage space with the second row folded. Accompanying the competitive amount of cargo space is the impressive Dive-N-Hide Cargo System that Nissan provides. This system allows you to maximize the space you are provided with, letting you customize the storage area to keep your cargo safe and promote privacy.

Also maximizing space is the EZ Flex Seating System that allows you to split, fold, tilt, and slide the seats to fit your cargo needs. This doesn't mean Nissan has left out features to promote comfort; the available Zero Gravity seats for the front seats are designed to cradle your body in a way that matches the zero-g feeling of space to reduce the fatigue of a long drive.

Performance Features

Where the interior includes more than you would expect, the performance falls below what you would expect. As the deceiving feature of the Rogue, you are given one engine option that is standard across all trims, a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that can produce around 170 horsepower. While not enough to keep you constantly excited while driving, it is enough to get the job done; it falls right in the average for the class, making sure it isn't too detrimental, but certainly not the force behind the impressive sales figures.

Continuing on the topic of unremarkable, the Rogue has an available all-wheel drive system. Keeping par with all other crossovers, the AWD system will improve traction in the rain or snow, and on dirt, gravel, or tight turns, but the front-wheel drive that comes standard is certainly enough for the majority of drivers. If you are someone who is looking for a vehicle to take you off the beaten track and into a more rigorous adventure, the Rogue doesn't quite make the cut.

The Necessary Safety

With manufacturers making a push towards safer vehicles, Nissan has included all of the features that you will need to feel comfortable when you are traveling. Including many features at the base that others just leave as options, the Rogue comes pretty well-equipped with a rearview camera, Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. You can elect to upgrade your safety features with a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitors, a lane-departure warning system, and a forward-collision alert system. When properly equipped, the Nissan Rogue even the top ranking from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) by being named a Top Safety Pick+ vehicle.

Final Thoughts

The Rogue has enough options and features that make up for the lackluster performance. As one of the top selling vehicles, the Rogue has already done enough to prove it is a worthy choice in a competitive segment.
